  • Re-Ignition #1: Discovering and Re-Discovering

Welcome to the (official) first column of Re-ignition. This is a column about discovering and rediscovering the passion of this great hobby. Comics have been an important part of my life ever since I was eight years old. I’ve always been grateful for the things comics have given me, and intend to repay in kind. [...]

  • Killing The Grizzly #4: The Digital Comics Business Model

The Digital Comics Business Model – Getting Started I struggled with whether I should actually call this article “The Digital Comics Business Model”, because, ultimately, EVERY single Killing the Grizzly article will be precisely this, and what’s the point of having to sub-subtitle every article because I stupidly choose too overly-generic a main subtitle (KILLING THE [...]

  • The Septagon Briefing #7: Writing

Septagon asked me if I might consider writing something about actually writing a comic, especially for those who are new at writing comic scripts. My wife and I got our first comic script from the back of a Sandman graphic novel, and then later a major big name comic book writer showed us a script [...]

  • Killing the Grizzly #3: Life After Diamond

PART 1 – EVERYONE PASSES “GO”: THE BREAKING OF A MONOPOLY “THE HIBERNATION PERIOD IS OVER, IT’S TIME TO MAKE SOME SOUP. The bear has awakened, and it needs to be killed. Not later, now. Or some comics creators or going to die.” KILLING THE GRIZZLY was going to focus on a far different topic [...]

  • The Septagon Briefing #3: Career Paths

Found in my local library system: –Cool Careers Without College for People Who Love Manga, Comics, And Animation (Cool Careers Without College series) (Library Binding) Just from the title, I was provoked to think about the whole issue. “Is the point of this,” I wondered, “to get kids excited about this stuff before they even [...]

In our last visit, I shared with you my favorite social networking sites. This month, as promised, we will discuss the Do’s & Don’ts when participating in these sites. • Fourth Panel Estate #6: All Star Demon Tea Party

Before we begin this week a public service announcement: Fuck you National Express Rail. So it’s been one of those weeks. Fortunately it’s been made all the more bearable by Gunnerkrigg Court which has had me laughing quietly to my self in public places for days after I blitzed the archives. This made the local, [...]

50 Awesome Sketchbook Scans Worth Checking Out

Recently I came across an awesome site. I had been working on some designs for Septagon Studios when I started to feel myself getting a little irritated with my work. At that point I decided to stop doing what I was doing, I had to find some quick inspiration to get me back into the zone. After jumping from site to site, I came across something interesting, a site that has some of the best sketches that I’ve seen in a long time. As I began to scroll down the page I thought about all the sketchbooks that I’ve kept over the years that contained some of my best ideas and works. I grabbed some sketchbooks and started to flip through the pages. Not only did this website inspire me, but I was motivated by my work from the past. Soon after I was back on track, refreshed with a burst of inspiration ready to conquer my work. Anyways enough of me rambling, check out this extensive list of Sketchbook Scans that was put together by Shane Ward.

Sketchbooks are a playing ground, a visual journal, a place to dump all your thoughts and ideas. It doesn’t matter what the subject is, all that matters is that you’re empting out all that stuff that’s been floating around in your head. Sketchbooks can help motivate and inspire you to create. Every doodle, line, and scribble is important, don’t throw anything out. And remember to always keep it on hand because you’ll never know when that next bright idea will hit.
How many Sketchbooks do you own? What kind of stuff are you putting in your sketchbooks?
